Brian Billow is one of today’s go-to directors for the comedy genre. He spent the first part of his career as an award-winning Creative Directorat DDB Chicago and McCann Erickson NY, working with brand clients such as MasterCard, Budweiser and Wrigley’s, to note a few. He parlayed his experience as creative director/art director/copywriter into an award-winning directing style characterized by both strong comedic performance and a cinematic visual aesthetic. An admitted improv junkie—he studied the acting craft at Second City Chicago and New York’s Peoples Improv Theater—Billow’s work also reflects a sixth sense about timing.


Recent work includes the viral video sensation BETH—a short film parody inspired by the classic KISS rock ballad. BETH earned rave reviews in media tastemakers ranging from Creativity and Adweek to Vice and Huffington Post, and made its worldwide premiere at the Flux Film Series at Los Angeles’ Hammer Museum. Billow also directed “Keep an Open Mouth” for Miracle Whip, which premiered during the GRAMMYs last year and was called out as a funny and memorable anthem by the Los Angeles Times, Yahoo! News, Creativity and Adweek. And he has recently directed popular comedic campaigns for Luv’s and HH Gregg. Billow’s efforts have also been acknowledged with a number of industry awards. Among the most recent honors, a One Show Pencil for Walmart “Baby Comedian” (The Martin Agency), and a Cannes Lion for GameStop “Yay” (The Richards Group). His Sprint “Pajamas” (Leo Burnett) was a One Show Finalist this year, as well. Billow’s short film Bodega enjoyed a busy Festival run, receiving the Audience Award at the Chicago Gen Art Film Festival. Billow has also directed spots for Nike, Chicago White Sox, Honda, Keystone Beer, McDonald’s, M&Ms and IKEA; in collaboration with top agencies such as Wieden+Kennedy Portland, Energy BBDO Chicago, RPA, Saatchi & Saatchi NY, Arnold Boston, BBDO NY and O&M NY. He’s picked up additional recognition in the press for “Jesus,” a commercial for Irish bookmaker Paddy Power, via Crispin Porter + Bogusky, which used satire to push boundaries; and his first Miracle Whip campaign via McGarry Bowen Chicago, with comedians Jeffrey Tambor and Michael Ian Black, praised for cleverly parodying iconic PSAs. Billow calls Brooklyn home and ping pong his healthy obsession; he’s a regular at PIPS Table Tennis club in Brooklyn where he recently took third place at the Healthier Generation Benefit Table Tennis Tournament at PIPS!
