Cary Fukunaga


Cary Fukunaga is an accomplished director of feature films, TV and commercials. His Jane Eyre (2011), with Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender, earned an Academy Award nomination, and was praised by tastemakers such as Rolling Stone, which called the film a fresh rendition of the classic novel for today’s generation. His first feature, Sin Nombre (2009), was honored across the film festival circuit including winning the prestigious Directing Award at Sundance.


Fukunaga has directed popular commercials as well, all evoking a sweeping sense of humanity usually reserved for cinema. Highlights include Budweiser “Gather Together” and Levi’s “America,” the last part of the Go Forth campaign which picked up multiple awards including AICP and CA honors. The spots are via agencies Translation New York and Wieden+Kennedy Portland.


Fukunaga is currently in preproduction for HBO’s “True Detective,” an Anonymous Content production starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. He will direct all episodes of the crime drama written by Nic Pizzolatto.


The son of a Swedish mother and Japanese father, Fukunaga was born in Oakland, and has lived in various places such as France and Japan. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in History from UC Santa Cruz, and attended the Grenoble Institute of Political Studies and NYU’s graduate film program. He currently resides in New York City.
